Congestion. Pollution. Accidents! This is Pune for us today. 1.6 lakh vehicles get added to the roads of Pune every year. Will adding more roads and flyovers help? Or will we get even more vehicles? More congestion? More pollution? More deaths? Instead let's encourage walking, cycling and public transport. Really, really good public transport. Let us conserve energy, save our heritage, protect our lives, leave a livable city to our children. Let's be smart!! |

Readers of the Marathi daily Sakaal in Pune would have noticed that their Jaagar (awakening) section has recently focussed a lot on traffic issues. The section features articles by both editors and journalists of Sakaal, as well as other citizens. The Sakaal Jaagar edition of 17th September discusses some of the issues very clearly. In particular, do not miss this lead article by Anand Agashe. |

Need for integrated transport planning for Pune city |
The Pune edition of Indian Express is carrying a series of articles aimed at "seeking traffic solutions" for Pune. While we may not agree with everything that is said in the articles (such as the implicit suggestion that all open land be used for parking), they have many good points too (such as questioning why Pune city does not have a comprehensive traffic and transport plan in the first place). The first two articles are available here and here. Feel free to comment on them by starting a discussion in our forum. |
